Canines gather in Arbroath for a colorful medieval dog show

They came, they saw, they conquered … and they barked! Arbroath’s medieval dog was a real howl for local pooches.

More than 25 dogs and their owners took the opportunity to dress their pets in colorful costumes on Arbroath’s Beacon Green.

Ruff’s Medieval Dog Show is part of the Arbroath 2020 + 1 Festival, which celebrates the 700th anniversary of the Arbroath Declaration.

Arbroath is a town famous for its colorful historical festival, and owners can show off their dog’s clothes before putting them on a throne for a professional photo.

The photos are now available on the Arbroath 2020 + 1 website and a poster for the city center is in the process of being made.

Success at the dog show

Pippa Martin, Creative Producer for Arbroath 2020 + 1 says: “We will hopefully put it in the disused courthouse on the High Street. They have some boarded up windows so we’re going to use these.

“There is such a large community of dog owners in Arbroath. It really is part of the city. We take up that. It’s a new way to have a pageant, creative activity, and fun community event.

“The dogs loved it when you looked after them. For the next one we could include agility, as many dogs jumped from the throne! “

Pippa says the owners have come up with stunning regal attire for their canine companions.

“An owner with a miniature dachshund confiscated a friend he knew was good at sewing to make his coat for him. It was probably the best thing on the show with the intricate details. It had a motif of the abbey, the signal tower, the saltire, the flag – everything.

Best in Show: Bruce Swankie and a regal looking Ralph.

“We had a couple who created a fantastic coat for their working cocker spaniel. They had made an outfit that looked like a musketeer.

“We also had a volunteer crocheting live that day. She made a chain mail hat and also a crocheted crown. “
