FALMOUTH – Cotuits (8-8) 3-2 win over Falmouth (5-8-2) on Sunday started and ended with the Kettleers avoiding disaster.

A 25-pitch final point of the ninth saw the Commodore’s two runners and eventually put both in the points position. However, thanks to a crazy catch behind home plate, pitcher Shaddon Peavyhouse was able to come back and beat TCU’s Brayden Taylor in three places to make the final.

Eight innings back, Stanford pitcher Quinn Matthews was in a similar situation.

After a five-pitch walk, hitting a bat and then giving up another seven-pitch walk, Matthews had loaded the bases on three batter on his debut in the Cape League. The Cardinal got through, however, hitting Falmouth’s # 4, 5, and 6 bats to work out of the jam.

The Tigers are optionally right-handed Matt Manning for Triple-A after the ball game last night, the team announced. The move makes room for Derek Hollandwho will be reinstated from the 10-day casualty list.

Manning has been one of the Tigers’ top prospects since finishing ninth overall in the 2016 draft. Along with Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal, Manning plays an important role in the Tiger’s reconstruction strategy. The Tigers have long been a thriving organization, of course, but it is only now that all three of their highly touted arms have begun arriving in Motor City. With five starts this season, Manning is the last of the three to make his Major League debut.

As with Mize and Skubal, Manning’s initial results were relatively disappointing. The 23-year-old has a 6.95 ERA / 5.36 FIP through 22 innings with a solid walk rate of 7.9 percent but a below-average strikeout rate of 8.9 percent. It’s still early to judge Manning, of course, and arguably he did his best against the Twins on Friday night, throwing five innings and getting two well-deserved runs on two hits and three walks while cutting three. The change makes sense at this point, however, as the Tigers will not need a fifth starter for the foreseeable future with the All-Star break from Monday.

So far, Manning has presented a relatively diverse arsenal, topped by a 93.3 mph four-collector that has thrown 62.0 percent of the time. He especially compliments the heater with a move to left-handed and a slider to right-handed, occasionally in a change of pace, looping curveball, clocking at 78.3 miles per hour.

The slider-forward approach is one that we’ve seen with many Tigers hurlers this season, with Mize and Skubal also relying heavily on the slider, as mentioned earlier Here and Here by Timothy Jackson from Baseball Prospectus. As Spencer TurnbullHe too had increased his slider usage from 20.9 percent to 24.5 percent this year before he was injured.

A flyball-heavy approach has left Manning a little vulnerable to the long ball this season, particularly in Triple-A, where he’s been awarded a home run-to-fly-ball rate of 27.5 percent. While this number is astronomically high and is sure to decrease somewhat to the mean, it has been marked for three more home runs in the majors, which corresponds to a home run rate of 3.0 percent – roughly the league average.

The 34-year-old Hollander will return to the Tiger’s bullpen again. The seasoned southpaw made 14 appearances in the season with a total of 15 innings of work with an unsightly 9.60 ERA. However, the ERA indicators – 4.01 SIERA, 4.04 FIP – complement Holland’s contribution much better. The difference could be due to a .426 GDP, which is both above the league-wide average of .297 and above his own career average of .299.

Holland was a bit wild, with a gait rate of 11.5 percent, despite a career high of 74.4 percent on the first pitch hit. To his credit for moving up in the count, Holland cut 25.6 percent of Batters, a strong mark that is just above the league average for Relievers.

Holland has been on the injured list with a shoulder infection since June 10th. It was his second assignment in the IL this season. The journeyman, who formerly belonged to the Rangers, White Sox, Cubs, Giants and Pirates, joined the Tigers on a minor league deal this off-season and made the team out of spring training.

It was worth the wait for those who weathered the rain delays as Dickinson beat Laurel in additional innings 10-9 in a walk-off fashion. Landon Olson supplied the game-winning RBI single and sent Isaac Daley home to score from the second base.

“It felt amazing,” said Olson. “I didn’t want to do too much (on the plate). I did too much at the beginning of the count and wanted to hit a line drive and it worked. “

It was quite a way to get to that conclusion. Before players settled in and viewers could get their first snack from the concession booth, storms rolled through Dickinson, delaying the game by nearly two hours.

It was in the lower part of the first inning when the players were called back to their dugouts.

Perhaps the first rain delay came to the Roughriders as they would allow five runs in the top of the second inning. Carson Weiler went two batter with loaded bases when Dickinson fell 2-0. Three more runs were scored from balls struck into the outfield as the Dodgers took a 5-0 lead.

“The rain delays are an odd thing,” said Dickinson head coach Tyler Frenzel. “In the first inning we brought runners to first and second place without anyone being out and benefiting from it. They shift the momentum and you just try to play it through. “

Jadon Bast helped the Roughriders get back into the game with an RBI single in the third inning. The hosts were down 5-2 at this point.

Weiler continued up the hill but ran into trouble again and allowed a triple with two runs in the fourth inning, which effectively knocked him out of the game.

Dickinson responded with two runs from Nathaniel Jilek in the bottom of the fourth run to put the score at 7-4 as more difficult weather approached.

“We all just had to warm up and that slowed the momentum,” said Olson. “But it helped us later.”

Another rain delay followed, which lasted about 20 minutes this time, but this time should benefit the roughriders.

The game was named with Dickinson, who had runners in first and second place. On the first pitch when play resumed, Frenzel called for a double steal which was perfectly executed and the Roughriders then had two runners in points with an out and a down of three.

“We had them nailed down,” said Frenzel. “We talked about it and decided that we would do it on the first pitch.”

This would trigger a five-run rally after the delay for a total of seven runs in the inning to take a 9-7 lead. Riley O’Donnell’s two-time threesome ended the rally for Dickinson.

Drew Kovash was on the hill behind Hamlet and held the lead after giving up two lead-off walks in the fifth inning. He would give up the lead, however, after handing in a home run to Laurel’s Richie Cortese in the sixth game, who put the score at 9-9.

Troy Berg made a nice defensive game in the same inning when he put a ground ball on the field and threw the lead runner at third base with an out. It made sure a potential victim fly ball or base hit wouldn’t let the roughriders fall behind.

Dickinson had a chance to finish the game in seventh after Jilek dashed into midfield at second base with a soft flyball, but Tory Berg landed in the next at-bat.

It was the only tournament game played at Dakota Community Bank & Trust on Thursday, as the other six teams will play their first games tomorrow. Dickinson plays Sturgis with the first pitch set for 8:30 p.m. in the last game of the day

GLADSTONE – The Gladstone Indians withstood the pressure of having the bases loaded late by the Menominee Red Wave to take the win 8-4 Thursday night in Gladstone.

After the conclusion of a six-inning regulation game, three additional exhibition innings were played between the two teams.

Prior to the game, Dayton Bernson was awarded the inaugural Christain Groleau Memorial Scholarship.

Groleau – who passed away in January of 2020 – was an avid member of the Gladstone baseball community and was a part of the 2014 championship team.

Trevor Hansen started the game pitching for Gladstone, with Mason LaChance closing things in the sixth.

With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth for the Red Wave – Ashton Barstow and Ethan Russell aboard with singles and Andrew Schroeder on from a walk – into the box stepped Zach Starzynski.

Strazynski made solid contact with the ball, sending it into right-centerfield. As it dropped, so did John Soderman to slide himself under the ball for the catch and final out of the game.

The Red Wave got one up ont the Indians right away as pitcher Andrew Schroeder hitting a lead-off solo home run.

Two more runs followed with RBIs from Kenney and Barstow to leave the Indians down 3-0 right away.

Entering the bottom of the fourth, the Indians still trailed 3-1, their sole run at that point coming courtesy of Owen Trombley reaching home on a passed ball.

By the end of the inning, Gladstone would lead 5-3.

LaChance kicked off the inning with a deep fly ball for a double. John Soderman followed that up – after a Trombley strikeout – with a double of his own off the left-field fence to put himself on second and LaChance on third.

Singes from Aeden Creten and Elijah Shier brought LaChance and Soderman home to tie the game.

Tyler Darmogray hit a single for the go-ahead run as Creten scored.

The final run in the fourth came as Nick Martin – pinch running for Darmogrey – reached home on a single-turned-double from Caden Alworden.

Soderman, Shier and Bernson each earned RBI’s in the seventh to make it 8-3.

Menominee scored one more run in the sixth as Michael Hensley tagged up from third on a Matthew Mellinger sacrifice fly.

Schroeder – in addition to his home run – pitched the entire game for Menominee.

NEW YORK– In an attempt to bolster their bullpen for the 2021 season, the Mets have awarded free agent relief pitcher Trevor May a two-year contract for $ 15.5 million.

MIAMI — Jorge Alfaro scored a drawn homer in the eighth inning, and the Miami Marlins ended the Los Angeles Dodgers’ winning streak in nine games with a 5-4 win Monday night.

Jazz Chisholm made it 4-2 with a single in the fourth.

Dodgers starter Walker Buehler led the third with a Trevor Rogers doubles and faced Chris Taylor doubles. Justin Turner’s single went in Taylor.

Rogers was overturned after five innings. On his first start since being named All-Star, he allowed two runs on six hits and dropped eight.

Buhler allowed four runs on five hits and hit six in five innings. The right-handed went two and hit a batter.

The capacity restrictions at LoanDepot Park were lifted for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, although there were still plenty of good places available. The start of the four-game series attracted 15,290 fans.

Marlins: RHP Sixto Sánchez is about to undergo arthroscopic surgery and won’t hit this season after an MRI reveals a small tear in the posterior capsule of his throwing shoulder. Sánchez has been sidelined throughout the year due to shoulder pain that is expected to be one of the main pillars in the club’s rotation.

The Roland Story softball team took a big win against a Collins Maxwell team ranked third in Class 1A, took three wins at the Heart of Iowa Conference, and lost two games at the Ottumwa Invitational last week.

The Norse, who ranks 13th in 3A, suffered a 6-1 loss to Ottumwa in six innings and a 6-2 setback in five innings to a Southeast Polk team that ranked 12th in 5A at Ottumwa Invite Friday was rated. The two defeats brought Roland-Story to 22-8 in the season.

Roland-Story had five hits in the defeat against Ottumwa. Ally Ringsby was 2 for 3 with a double, steal and run apiece, Reagan Faber went 2 for 3 with two steals and Hayden Walters single for the Norse.

Madison Geise took the Bulldogs defeat after giving up four earned runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. Dana Vinson allowed two runs with five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

When the Red Sox decided not to bring Jackie Bradley Jr. back after eight years in Boston, many wondered what would happen to the Sox’s outfield defense.

We have answers more than halfway through the season.

In the bottom of the 10th inning on Friday night, midfielder Kiké Hernandez made a perfect game when he caught a flyball from Sean Murphy and fired a ball from medium depth in midfield to nail Seth Brown to home plate.

Brown would have been the tie-run, but Hernandez’s throw made a jump to Christian Vazquez and Vazquez set the day in a bang-bang game that saved the Sox’s 3-2 win over the A’s.

“I like to play defense,” said Hernandez afterwards. “I am very proud of it.”

The Red Sox were in disbelief that the A’s decided to send Brown home with no one in the inning.

“I didn’t think he would send it,” said Hernandez. “I felt like I was my baseball watch in my mind, I felt like I came in often. I just wanted to make sure I made a good throw where the runner wouldn’t advance on the throw if the runner didn’t go on the third. ”

Manager Alex Cora said he knew Brown was out before the piece was developed.

“I said (third base, coach Carlos Febles) in Spanish, ‘He’s outside, he’s outside, he’s outside’ about five times,” said Cora. “It wasn’t deep enough and he was the key to being behind the ball and I was like, ‘This guy will be out.'”

It was the Red Sox’s 25th outfield assist of the year, six more than the second best team in the majors, the Marlins, who have 19.

“The way we play defense on the outfield is elite, to put it that way,” said Cora. “I know a lot of people had their doubts this season because we didn’t have Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi and Jackie, but these three guys are up there, they play elite defense. They throw at the right bases, they keep their throws down, their routes are great, the communication is excellent.

“So defensively we are one of the best outfield players in the big leagues, if not the best.”

Cora is not wrong.

The Red Sox outfield ranks second in the majors with 20 defensive runs saved thanks to their defensive exploits. They rank third with an ultimate zone rating of 9.2. And they pass the eye test, with Alex Verdugo playing in a great left field, Hunter Renfroe looking like a natural in right field, and a rotating cast of players including Hernandez taking the job in the middle.

“I’ve played with (Verdugo) before and I don’t even have to talk about what Hunter did in the right field this year,” said Hernandez. “It was a lot of fun to watch. I knew he was a good defender because I played him in the same league for two or three years. But I didn’t think he was that good. I don’t think there are many real outfielders in baseball who play better defense than him. It was incredible to see. ”

Even without Bradley, the Red Sox’s outfield defense continues to impress.

“That was a very good litter, man,” said left-handed Eduardo Rodriguez of Hernandez’s litter. “That was something that you don’t see very often in the outfield, throwing the ball like that, bouncing off, throwing to the catcher and getting an out like that. Especially in this situation. It was great to be a part of it. ”

WORCESTER – The Worcester Red Sox played parts of two games through the Raindrops on Thursday as they won the suspended game 6-2 on Wednesday and fell 1-0 in five innings of rain against the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre-shortened contest in a very wet polar park.

Christian Arroyo served as DH in the second game and ran out with a 0-for-1 strikeout. He was also hit by a pitch and started a long foul flyball. If the weather cooperates, he’ll be in Worcester tomorrow to continue his rehab assignment as he works his way back from a bruised right shin.

Stephen Gonsalves started for the WooSox against the RailRiders on Wednesday, drove two goalless innings and got five out of six outs through strikeout, but also went two and allowed two hits.

Raynel Espinal made his originally scheduled start on Thursday as he went through his normal warm-up routine and picked up where the game ended at the start of the third inning. Espinal went five strong innings, allowing a run with four hits and four walks, dropping six. Four walks did not help his pitch count, which reached 95 through five innings. Espinal has won seven decisions in a row and improved to 7-1 during the season. It was the first time in 15 days that Espinal was back on the hill for Worcester as he wasn’t on the team to play for team Dominican Republic in an Olympic qualifying tournament.

The WooSox took third place on Thursday with a 2: 1 lead. Jarren Duran led the home half of the first half, stole the second and advanced to third after a Cordero groundout. Johan Mieses left with two outs to present Chris Herrmann, who was single in Duran. Jack Lopez then laced a single to the right, but Lousy was tossed on the record, trying to score from second place.

The WooSox expanded their lead in the second. Chad De La Guerra drew a leadoff walk and later scored in the inning at the choice of an outfield player by Duran. Duran then stole his second base of the night, this time a belated theft, with Duran breaking for the pocket when RailRiders catcher Robinson Chirinos was up and out of his crouch. Chirinos pumped double before making the late throw to second place.

On Thursday, the WooSox extended their lead with home runs by Marcus Wilson and Herrmann, who went 3-on-4 over the course of the nine innings. Wilson, who had problems recently, worked against RailRiders starter Deivi Garcia to 3-0, but then received two punches. He grabbed the payout slot and placed it in the left field.

Herrmann went deep from RailRiders replacement Braden Bristo and hit a solo shot to the right, his fifth home run of the season.

The WooSox had a small time window to play before heavy rains came in the evening. With Espinal, the designated starter for Thursday, who fielded in the first game, it was up to the bullpen to cope with the nightcap. John Schreiber got the start and despite two walks to start the game, he settled in to hit two goalless innings.

Matt Hall beat third and the WooSox were bitten by the speed of the RailRider. Estevan Florial hit a leadoff single, stole second, and moved up to third with a one-out groundout. He came home with a Socrates Brito single, and that was all Scranton / Wilkes-Barre would need.

The WooSox had a chance of a draw. Yairo Munoz hit a one-out single in fourth and stole the second, but was caught trying to beat third place in a close match as well. In the fifth and final inning, Jack Lopez hit a one-out double from the Worcester Wall and advanced to third when Jett Bandy grabbed Catcher’s interference, but Duran fanned out to end the inning.

The WooSox and RailRider will try to continue their series on Friday evening in Polar Park, although the forecast looks ominous. The two will also compete against each other on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. and on Sunday at 6:35 p.m.
