Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 26th Ed Howard
Iowa Boys
The Iowa Cubs were beaten by the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 13-2.
Joe Biagini got hammered for four runs in the first inning and from then on the I-Cubs went downhill. Biagini’s final line consisted of four runs, three earned, on five over 1.2 innings. He went and knocked you out.
Dillon maple the team retired in the seventh order as part of a rehab mission. Maples crossed out two. His fastball was 94-96 mph, which went down a bit, but he threw it as well as his slider and curve for punches. He threw 11 pitches and 8 were strikes. Just One Pitch was one of those runaway wild Maples pitches we fear.
Catcher Taylor Gushue went 2 for 4.
Iowa’s two runs were scored on a wild pitch and a balk.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were wiped out by the Mississippi Braves, 5-0.
Starter Dakota Chalmers hit only two innings but allowed no runs and only one hit. Chalmers turned down three and no one left.
Alex Katz took over from Chalmers in the third inning and took the loss. Katz gave up a triple home run in the fourth inning, which was the only three runs he allowed work over four innings. Katz made four hits. He went two and hit six.
The Smokies only had two hits today, both singles. They also struck 13 times and never left. Nelson Maldonado and Connor Myers had the two singles.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs and the Ft. Wayne TinCaps were tied 1-1 in the third inning when it rained. You will finish every nine innings on Sunday and then play a seven innings game.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were there lit by the Columbia Fireflies (Royals), 6-2 in ten innings.
Manuel Espinoza turned in a strong start as he pitched five scoreless innings. He gave up four hits and left one. Espinoza deleted two.
Jarod Wright hit the bottom of the tenth inning with the score still tied 2-2. The first batsman hit a flyball in the right field to move the runner to third place. Then Wright purposely went the next two batters to load the bases with an out. The game ended when the next batter, Darryl Collins, hit a grand slam.
Short stop Ed Howard led the top of the first inning with his first professional home run. He was 1 for 5.
midfield player Jacob Wetzel went 2 for 5.
First baseman Ryan Reynolds went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.
