How the lockdown affects local sport – The Western Weekender
Here’s the current status on a variety of sports affected by the current lockdown:
NRL: The Penrith Panthers will continue to play at BlueBet Stadium but there will be no crowds until after the lockdown. The NRL competition continues under strict biosecurity rules.
RUGBY LEAGUE: The NSWRL has suspended competitions across the Greater Sydney region. They are scheduled to resume on the weekend of July 17th, giving teams a chance to practice before returning to the game, but that is subject to the NSW Public Health Order at this time.
AFL: The GWS Giants moved to Melbourne along with the Swans during the ongoing COVID crisis in Sydney.
AFL: Penrith’s round 11 game against the South West Sydney Magpies at Greygums Oval was postponed last weekend due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak. Meanwhile, the Penrith Ramettes also failed to come on the field with their clash against the Pennant Hills Demons. The games this weekend will also not take place due to the ongoing lockdown in Sydney.
NETBALL: The Panthers Netball Open and U23 teams each have two Premiership points after their opponent The Capital Spirit lost both games in Round 13 of the Netball NSW Premier League competition last week. Due to the lockdown in Sydney there will be no games this week and next week.
BASKETBALL: Penrith’s Round 11 games against the Sydney Comets in Basketball NSW’s Waratah 1 Men, Youth Men and Youth Women competitions have been postponed due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak. The games this weekend will also not take place due to the ongoing lockdown in Sydney.
PROTECTIVE SHIELD: Penrith’s round 11 game against West Harbor at Nepean Rugby Park was postponed last weekend due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak. The games this weekend will also not take place due to the ongoing lockdown in Sydney.
CLOSURE OF THE EVENT VENUE: The Penrith Valley Regional Sports Center in Cambridge Park is closed until further notice. All basketball competitions in the Penrith District have been suspended and school vacation programs canceled. Once the venue knows a possible return date to the sport, they will share their plans to resume all programs and activities.
OZTAG: The fields at Kingsway in St. Marys will be dormant until at least July 10th, with all Penrith OzTag activities being suspended indefinitely. The local association is currently working on plans to decide how to complete the competition. Visit Penrith OzTag’s Facebook page for the latest details.
SUPER NETBALL: Giants Netball and the NSW Swifts have both moved to Melbourne to keep the Super Netball season alive.
SEPARATING BELTS: The race will continue on Penrith Paceway but there will be no crowds.
Greyhounds: Greyhound racing continues at the Richmond Race Club in Londonderry without the crowds.
ALL COMMUNITY SPORTS: All community sports are canceled at this time.
