After Friday’s game, NC State coach Elliott Avent was frustrated and didn’t respond directly when asked if he or the baseball program encouraged players to get vaccinated.
“My job is to teach them baseball, make sure they get an education, and keep them on track,” he said. “But I’m not trying to indoctrinate my children with my values or my opinions. Of course we talk about a lot of things. But these are young men who can make their own decisions and they did. “
Avent rolled his eyes when asked if he was vaccinated.
“If you want to talk about baseball, we can talk about baseball,” he said. “If you want to talk about politics or anything like that, you can speak to my sports medicine director, Rob Murphy.”
NC State’s departure from the tournament marks the most notable disruption in NCAA postseason play during the COVID-19 pandemic. The VCU was eliminated from the NCAA men’s basketball tournament due to COVID-19 issues, but that came before a first-round game.
NC State won their first two CWS games, including 1-0 defending champions Vanderbilt on Monday, to position themselves well for a spot in the championship series.
