You can’t bet on it everything in the new US sports betting market. State regulations prohibit betting on many new events, unlike many offshore websites which are unregulated and can have pretty much anything.
But the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is an exception to this rule in at least some states.
DraftKings, BetMGM and PointsBet have posted odds on Chestnut versus field, total hot dogs eaten, matches between other competitors and more. Not every book has the contest in every state – DraftKings has it in New Jersey, but PointsBet doesn’t. Limits are $ 100 at DraftKings and bets are listed under “Novelty” instead of a specific sport.
The New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement originally didn’t allow operators to post odds in 2019, even after Major League Eating advocated it.
In 2020 these three states approved it for DK. And thanks to its partnership with Major League Eating, DraftKings has become the “market leader” in competitive food betting.
Selection for the 2021 hot dog food competition
Well, you now know that in some states you can bet on the Hot Dog Eating Contest. So what should you bet on?
Chestnut is such a big favorite that it won’t be worth betting $ 335 to win $ 10 against it.
So our Matt Mitchell and Darren Rovell broke down several different bet types and came up with their favorite – under 73.5 hot dogs at plus money at DraftKings.
This under has dropped from +165 to +125 in the last few days, with the over being -165. PointsBet is also offering under 74.5 at -105 if you want the extra dog.
Mitchell expects Chestnut to take a small step back this year after breaking another record with 75 hot dogs last year. Rovell argues that Chestnut doesn’t have to break records the same way that he does so even at 37 years of age, well ahead of the field.
Mitchell also likes the “exact hot dogs eaten” props from 70-72 or 73-74 to plus money if you can find them.
Props for hot dog eating contests
DraftKings has a few props, including the total number of hot dogs eaten and two matchup bets for other competitors.

Past Hot Dog Eating Contest Winners and Total Dogs Eaten
Chestnut has won all but one year since 2007, increasing its performance in the process. He has surpassed 70 dogs in 10 minutes in each of the last five competitions, including a record of 75 in 2020.
But last year he closed extremely strong, adding four hot dogs after the buzzer, as any hot dogs a candidate starts eating before the buzzer will be counted as long as they stay down.
